What they say: Think about the last time you set foot in the wilderness, walked along a river stream or paddled out to the middle of a lake. Though nothing might ground us as much as moments like these, it seems we spend less and less time in the wild outdoors.
At abitibi & co., nature is what gets us going, makes our hearts pump, and makes the hair on our arms stand up. We live for the moments that take us somewhere—physically, emotionally, and spiritually, new or unexpected. When destinations are reached and expeditions come to their end, we believe in finding a way to keep moving onward.
Spending more time outdoors allows us to see, hear, and feel how the wilderness is changing, and gives us a front row seat to the fragility of our ecosystem. This is a relationship: the more we get to know our natural surroundings, the less willing we’ll be to let them slip away.
And so BESIDE was born: To serve as a stage showcasing the innovative curiosity, the responsible resourcefulness, and the adventurous triumphs of a new community of outdoor enthusiasts who are redefining the scope of this relationship. This is a movement defined neither by sport nor celebrity—it’s inclusive of a community of inspiring people who have chosen, vehemently, to live, think, and play beyond the bend.
What we say: While cycling might be the outdoor activity we most often partake in, the truth is our character has been shaped by countless trips into the wilderness camping, climbing, kayaking, snowshoeing, and a multitude of other outdoor pursuits. It's why as a company we became a 1% for the Planet business, to support and protect the world around us so it's around for future generations.
BESIDE magazine might not be all about cycling (although this issue happens to have a few pieces about it - including a mention of one of our local favorites, D2R2), but it is about connecting with the world around us and how we can shape, affect, and bring about positive change. Don't think about it as a lecture however, consider it inspiration, sprinkled with pieces such as an excerpt from Lewis and Clark's journals, one about identifying some edible wild mushrooms, and sharing stories from around North America about people fighting the good fight to keep wild spaces wild.
