2022 Bicycle Maintenance Clinics

These clinics are open to ladies and gents and provide some basic skills that all cyclists should know and be comfortable carrying out! Typically you may bring your own wheel / bike or we will have some demo pieces that you can use instead.

Follow the Facebook event links for more information, to share with friends you think might be interested, or to purchase a ticket simply follow the Eventbrite link to purchase it directly.

Email us at Info@SpeedandSprocket.com with any additional questions.

Is there some other skill that you are interested in that you don't see here? Reach out to us to set up individualized clinics where we can work with just you or with a small group.

Extended day classes:

Sunday, April 10th, 2022: BM 401 - Novice Bike Maintenance Class at Abandoned Building Brewery in Easthampton, MA

We’ve had lots of interest in our maintenance classes, so we are bundling all of our typical individual classes into this one intense, one day workshop. Topics that will be covered include:
  • Flat tire repair
  • Cleaning and inspection of the entire bicycle
  • Proper drivetrain lubrication
  • Cable systems (traditional mechanical brake and derailleur - hydraulic and electronic systems will not be covered)

IMPORTANT NOTES:
  • All of the topics will be hands on with your bicycle.
  • Bring your bicycle!!!
  • Bring a ground cloth of some sort for the cleaning portion (painter's drop cloth, old sheet, etc.) and some rags (old, cut-up t-shirts work great).
  • Neither lunch or dinner will be provided, but feel free to bring snacks to eat during the workshop. Adult beverages will be available to purchase, feel free to bring non-alcoholic beverages.
  • Please note that workshop attendance will be limited to 10 participants and requires a minimum of 5 for it to run.
  •  While this workshop is scheduled to go until 6:00pm, we may go later if there are lots of questions/discussion.
  •  We ask that you consider wearing a mask for the comfort and safety of all participants

Upcoming Dates:

Individual classes:

Wednesday,  March 31st, 2022: BM 101 -  Fix-a-Flat Workshop at Abandoned Building Brewery  in Easthampton, MA

Are you ever worried heading out on a ride on your own that you'll get a flat tire and be stuck in the middle of  nowhere? Here's your chance to learn a valuable (and surprisingly easy) skill that might just save you the walk of shame home one day!

During this clinic you will:
  • Learn the parts of the wheel
  • Learn the most common causes of flats
  • Learn how to change a tube ON YOUR OWN!
  • Learn how to properly re-install your wheel

At the end of the clinic you will not only leave with all the above knowledge, but also a set of tire levers (don't worry, we'll show you how to use them) and a spare tube for your bike.

For more information visit the Facebook event page, or to order tickets, head HERE.

Wednesday, April 7th, 2022: BM 201 - Cleaning and General Care Workshop at Abandoned Building Brewery in Easthampton, MA

Don't come to this workshop not expecting to get dirty!

We'll show you the same process we use to go through bikes we are tuning up from tip to tail, cleaning as you go and inspecting for safety and other issues. Along the way we will talk about the dizzying array of lubes and cleaners that you have to pick from and our recommendations on what to go with.

While it may seem trivial, keeping your bike clean goes a long way in prolonging the life of your bike and keeping costly repair bills at bay. And while it might not be proven with empirical data, we're convinced that a clean bike is a happier bike is a faster bike!

We will provide work stands, tools, and cleaners and lube; you provide the elbow grease! By the end of the clinic you'll have a safe, clean, shiny, happy bike and the knowledge to keep it that way!

For more information visit the Facebook event page, or to order tickets, head HERE.

Wednesday, April 14th, 2022: BM 301 - Brakes and Derailleurs Basics at Abandoned Building Brewery in Easthampton, MA

Join us at this clinic where we'll go over two of your bike's most essential systems: your brakes and your shifters/derailleurs, the Nervous System of your bicycle! Although seemingly very different, they both are cable systems that work in a similar fashion and whose maintenance is critical for a well running machine.

During this workshop we'll discuss and cover the following:
  • Basic principles of cable systems
  • The differences between your brake and shifting systems
  • Proper derailleur set-up
  • Proper brake set-up
  • Evaluation of systems for wear and replacement
  • Adjusting both systems to achieve maximum possible performance
  • Proper replacement of cables and housing if necessary

Because of its technical nature, this class is limited to 10 participants.
